Memories of Iron Maiden's first concert in Athens in 1988. We asked 5 eyewitnesses to give us a taste of the legendary live at AEK Stadium: People with hair and leather getting off the tram, police everywhere, fears of incidents and in the end the top metal band of all time plowing the stage at the height of their glory.
Athens of the 1980s was a very different city. At stadiums and concerts, attention was needed – chases with the police and fights were the order of the day. To such an extent, that those of us who saw Iron Maiden in the 90s were in awe of their first appearance on Greek soil: when, that is, the British made 20 thousand people go wild at the AEK Stadium, on September 13, 1988.
