...And then there were four. Over the last month, you’ve helped whittle down our tournament of 32 of the best live bands in hard rock and metal down to four remaining competitors. But who will win the title of the Best Live Band? Let’s get into this quarterfinal matchup.
Iron Maiden withstood a fierce competition from Alice Cooper in the Devil Horn Region finals, but emerged victorious with just over 50 percent of the vote. Before that, they bested metal heavyweights Judas Priest and Anthrax. But there’s little doubt that Iron Maiden are deserving as one of hard rock and metal’s best live acts. Start with the stage theatrics of energetic frontman Bruce Dickinson. Add the triple guitar attack of Dave Murray, Adrian Smith and Janick Gehrs. There’s the killer low end of bassist and songwriter Steve Harris and drummer Nicko McBrain. And to finish it all off there is the theatrics of the band’s mascot Eddie the Head turning up at shows. It’s a sight to behold and leaves the ears pleased, as well.
Their opponent in the Best Live Band semifinals is Pearl Jam. In the quarterfinals, Pearl Jam bested Green Day in a hard fought match that went down to the final hours. Prior to Green Day, Pearl Jam defeated Foo Fighters and Red Hot Chili Peppers en route to the title. Since the early ’90s, Pearl Jam have remained one of rock’s top draws. It starts with charismatic vocalist Eddie Vedder, continues with a very tight frontline that includes guitarists Mike McCready and Stone Gossard and bassist Jeff Ament and finishes with drummer extraordinaire Matt Cameron. Part of the reason for Pearl Jam’s live success is the spontaneity and energy put into each marathon show. The band is just as likely to play a deep track or cool cover as they are to rock their standards and Pearl Jam shows are known for their epic nature.
So who will advance to the finals? It’s a tough decision. Vote for Iron Maiden or Pearl Jam in this Best Live Band matchup in the poll provided below. You can vote once per hour through the deadline of Tuesday, Aug. 4 at 10AM ET.
